Mr. Simon Wood possesses significant expertise in the diagnosis and management of oesophageal, stomach, gallbladder and liver/pancreas conditions. He is an accredited Upper GI endoscopist and endoscopy trainer, conducting over 400 gastroscopies annually.
You can find below some of the common conditions that he treats:
Gallstones / Gallbladder conditions
Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder, often due to a diet high in fat or refined sugars, and are more common with age or family history. They can cause symptoms like severe abdominal pain when they block the gallbladder duct or cause inflammation.
If gallstones move into the common bile duct, they can lead to serious conditions like jaundice, bile duct infections (cholangitis), or pancreatitis, which may be life-threatening.

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)/ Heartburn / Hiatus Hernia
Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid travels up into the oesophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn or a sour taste. While small amounts of acid reflux are normal, frequent occurrences can lead to inflammation (oesophagitis) or scarring.
Achalasia
Achalasia is a condition that affects swallowing due to improper functioning of the esophagus. It can cause symptoms such as regurgitation (food coming back up into the mouth), chest pain, and weight loss. The condition occurs because the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve controlling food passage into the stomach) does not relax properly, and the coordinated muscle contractions (peristalsis) that move food down the esophagus do not work well.
Groin / Abdominal Hernias
Hernias can occur in the groin (inguinal or femoral hernia), near the belly button (paraumbilical) or at previous surgery sites and scars (incisional hernias).
Liver & Pancreas conditions
There are many and varied conditions of the ‘solid organs’ in the abdomen which may give symptoms such as upper abdominal or back pain, loss of appetite, a feeling of fullness or vomiting. Conditions of the liver, pancreas or spleen can also be detected on blood tests or scans.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get referred?
Mr. Wood accepts referrals from your Insurance Company or your GP. Although it is helpful to have a GP letter, self paying patients do not have to have one. We always copy the GP into our correspondence following the consultation so that your medical records are up to date.
It is important to check with your insurance provider to check if you need a referral in the form of a letter from your registered doctor.
How much does a consultation cost?
For self-paying patients (ie. no insurance), a new patient consultation costs £185 and a follow-up consultation will cost £115.
When can I return to work?
This depends on the complexity and type of surgery and the demands of your job. This should be discussed with Mr. Wood.
