About Mr. Simon Wood
Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon
Mr. Wood serves as a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and privately at St Josephs Hospital, Newport where he performs surgeries, outpatient clinics and endoscopy.
His specialist interests include laparoscopic surgery for gallstones (cholecystectomy), gastro-oesophageal reflux / GORD / hiatus hernia (Fundoplication & LINX surgery), oesophageal achalasia and hernia surgery (laparoscopic and open techniques).
Mr Wood possesses significant expertise in the diagnosis and management of oesophageal, stomach, gallbladder and liver/pancreas conditions. He is an accredited Upper GI endoscopist and endoscopy trainer, conducting over 400 gastroscopies annually.

- Committed to medical and surgical education, Mr. Simon Wood has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCE), is a supervisor for trainee surgeons, course director and tutor for Royal College surgical skills courses and is an examiner for Cardiff University medical students.
- Within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Mr. Wood is Clinical Director for General Surgery, overseeing one of the top performing and largest departments in Wales.
- He is also actively involved in pan Wales initiatives, collaborating with the Welsh Government and surgeons across Wales to enhance patient pathways and reduce waiting times.
- Mr. Wood has presented at numerous national and international conferences, covering topics such as optimizing post-operative recovery in upper GI surgery and curriculum requirements for surgical trainees.
He completed his specialist training in General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgery within South Wales (Newport, Cardiff, Swansea), followed by a Senior Fellowship in Upper GI surgery in Adelaide, Australia.
This fellowship provided him with advanced expertise in oesophageal, gastric, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bariatric surgery. He also earned a Master's degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MMIS) from the University of Adelaide, enhancing his skills in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
